LAWYERS FOR LlTERACY’S LEGAL UP! PROGRAM

Local, state and federal court attorneys along with some of Miami’s most prestigious private lawyers, volunteer their time for Lawyers for Literacy’s Legal-Up! Program. Legal Up! is a collaborative initiative led by U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro, and Lisa Blair, President of the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership. It seeks to address the challenges that face vulnerable youth transitioning to adulthood by teaching basic legal concepts and related life skills in four interactive workshops.

The sessions, which are taught by legal professionals, cover such topics as: the rule of law; civic responsibility and criminal law; housing and landlord/tenant law; and financial literacy and employment. Youth participants are recruited from foster care, alternative high schools and juvenile detention. The program is sponsored by the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership and partly funded by the Children’s Trust.

The objective of the program is to empower these young adults and give them better problem solving skills and help them advocate for themselves.
